This volume, the fifth in a series that also covers Locke, Hegel, Rousseau, and Descartes, differs somewhat from its more straighforward predecessors in content. After an introductory essay entitled "Kant and the 'Age of Criticism,'" which provides background on Kant's intellectual and writing history, Caygill (coeditor, The Fate of the New Nietzsche, Ashgate, 1993) launches into a dictionary proper. But this is not a dictionary of terms in the conventional sense; the entries are not simply definitions but are more like mini-encyclopedia entries in that they provide analysis and link the terms to other relevant terms in Kant's works. In preparing the dictionary entries this way, Caygill offers a far more useful tool to readers of Kant than the standard dictionary. The bibliographies provide a chronological list of Kant's published writings, a bibliography of works referred to in the dictionary itself, and a list of recommended further readings. One interesting addition is an index that ties the names of philosophers to the dictionary entries in which they appear. Dr. Oetzel uses quantitative survey methods and/or mixed-method designs to address three strands: (1) conflict in culturally diverse work groups and organizations, (2) communication in the health care delivery process, and (3) partnerships between community members and academics to address community health. He is co-author (with Stella Ting-Toomey) of Managing Intercultural Communication Effectively (2001, SAGE) and author of Intercultural Communication: A Layered Approach (2009, Pearson). He is also the author of more than 60 articles and book chapters.

Stella Ting-Toomey (PhD, University of Washington) is a professor of human communication at California State University, Fullerton (CSUF). She has published numerous books and over more than 100 articles/chapters on the topics of intercultural conflict competence and ethnic identity negotiation process. A recent book title is Understanding Intercultural Communication, Second Edition (with Leeva Chung; Oxford University Press). Her publications have also appeared in the International Journal of Intercultural Relations, Communication Monographs, Human Communication Research, and The International Journal of Conflict Management, among others. Dr. Ting-Toomey’s teaching passions include intercultural conflict theory and practice and intercultural communication training. She is the 2008 recipient of the 23-campus wide CSU Wang Family Excellence Award, and the 2007–2008 recipient of the CSU-Fullerton Outstanding Professor Award. She has lectured widely throughout the United States, Asia, and Europe on the theme of mindful intercultural conflict competence.

About the Author

Eugenia Hepworth Berger became interested in parent involvement when she and her husband, Glen, became the parents of three children who attended public schools. A professional in early childhood education, sociology, family life education, and parent education for more than 35 years, she has two master’s degrees and a Ph.D. in sociological foundations of education. Eugenia has been active in many professional organizations, including the Association for Childhood Education International, the National Association for the Education of Young Children (life member), and the National Council for the Social Studies. She served on the board for the National Association of Early Childhood Teacher Educators, the Colorado Association for Childhood Education, the Colorado Association for the Education of Young Children, and was president of the Rocky Mountain Council on Family Relations. After finishing her doctorate at the University of Denver, she became a faculty member at Metropolitan State College. She retired in December 1997 and is now professor emerita of education.

 

Mari Riojas-Cortez, Ph.D. is Chair and Professor in the Department of Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching at the University of Texas at San Antonio. She received her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in bilingual education and early childhood education from the University of Texas at Austin. Her interest in family involvement began when she was a bilingual prekindergarten teacher at a public school district in San Antonio. Families were always very involved in her classroom in different ways and the influence on their children was noted in the way children excelled in school. Dr. Cortez realized early in her career that the success of young children came from families, even those who faced many challenges as long as they invested time working with them. Dr. Cortez research expertise includes Latino family involvement, children’s play in school settings, and classroom ecology. Dr. Cortez has published in major early childhood journals including Young Children, International Journal of Early Childhood, Early Childhood Education Journal, Advances in Early Education and Day Care, and Journal of Early Childhood Teacher Education, among others. Currently, she is the editor for Dimensions a journal of the Southern Early Childhood Association (SECA).
